Today we’d like to introduce you to Fred White.
Fred, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Finishing up playing college offensive line roughly 10 years ago left me physically and somewhat mentally broken and that brokenness put me on a pursuit to recovery my health. Along this path, I was consistently listing to the Joe Rogan Experience podcast and he constantly talked about floating and how much it has helped his mental and physical. He had his own Float Lab tank in his basement and constantly talked about Crash and his float and float tank manufacturing business, Float Lab Tech, in Venice Beach. So, I had to try it for myself and after that first float my life really has never been the same. I feel in love with it as a consumer, it gave me back and joint adjustments that I have never experienced before and for the first time I was able to get my mind to relax.
I knew after that first float that I had to stop everything I was doing and get involved with making floating more accessible to the public. I left San Diego and moved up to Venice Beach with Crash for a couple years to help the manufacturing of his Float Lab tanks. We were able to get his tanks to be the first commercially certified float tanks in the world, which meet all building and health codes for hygiene, safety, and electrical use. Once the certification was complete I moved back to San Diego to create and open flōt.
I created flōt to give customers access to the best and safest float tanks in the world (Float Lab) while making it the most affordable in San Diego and the U.S. Floating has such an amazing potential to be a tool that impacts an individual’s life in a very positive way and I want everyone to be able access and afford this highest quality tool.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was a rough road to get flōt open being it was the first and only permitted float spa in San Diego. Once the doors opened up there has been some expected trials and tribulations of owning and operating a business of this kind for the first time but the feedback and word or mouth growth of the customers has been consistent and amazing. It such cool experience to see people benefit from flōt, I was sure they would but that didn’t take the fear of failure away.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Flōt is a Float Spa in San Diego that provides you with the opportunity to experience the pinnacle of relaxation by floating inside of the safest and largest sensory deprivation tanks / chambers. Floating is an experience of total relaxation in your own personal, weightless environment where all five of your senses are free from external stimuli.
What sets flōt apart from the other float spas in San Diego is its Float Tanks and the ethic of the business:
~ To provide our customers with the safest and most hygienic isolation floatation environments/chambers and facilities at the fairest rate possible while striving to leave the smallest environmental footprint.
~ Our sensory deprivation chamber / tanks filtration systems are the only tested and certified (NSF) in the World and is achieved in a natural and organic process that does not involve the use of dangerous and harsh chemicals such as chlorine; this is the main reason why flōt purchases from Float Lab Tech. All of the parts are built to last a life time, reducing replacement consumption.
John C. Lilly invented the float tanks in 1954 and we wanted to carry the torch of his creation and ethic:
“The standards are those we have found necessary for reliability of operation, for safety, and for maintenance of a hygienic environment. Low cost of operation and safety are favored over low initial investment; if a more expensive item meets our standards and decreases the cost of operation we use it rather than a less expensive item that may be less reliable, unsafe or costly to operate in the long run. A cheaper item may end up generating far more cost in terms of unreliable operation, redesign cost, time spent on its maintenance, anxiety over its unsafe operation, and its potentially unhealthful effects on persons using the tank.” — John C. Lilly, inventor of isolation flotation experience
